DOJ Announces Amazon Settlement of Alleged Fair Credit Reporting Violations

DOJ official said, “Consumers whose identities have been stolen should not face unnecessary red tape when they investigate how their identities were misused and seek to clear their names.”

The Department of Justice (DOJ) announced the resolution of allegations from the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) that Amazon violated the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA) by not providing records and transactions to identity theft victims. A $2.25 million civil penalty was imposed on the company for not providing the records needed to support identity theft victims’ claims. The FCRA requires entities to provide records and transactions at no charge for up to 30 days after an individual requests them.

“Consumers whose identities have been stolen should not face unnecessary red tape when they investigate how their identities were misused and seek to clear their names,” Assistant Attorney General Brett Shumate of the Justice Department’s Civil Division said. “The Justice Department will continue working with the Federal Trade Commission to protect identity theft victims.”

Amazon is also required to prominently provide resources on its website for identity theft victims seeking such records for support.
